Can a GP Practice Add Cosmetic, Skin and Hair Services?
Yes, provided the doctors and nurses delivering them meet the registration, training and scope of practice requirements for each procedure. A general practice already has what the regulations lean on most: registered medical practitioners who can consult, assess and prescribe. The gap is usually procedure specific training, cosmetic specific records and consent processes, and compliant marketing, which is what the program supplies.
What Your Practice Keeps Responsibility For
Do You Need a Licence to Operate Cosmetic Lasers in Your State?
It depends on your state. According to ARPANSA, the cosmetic use of lasers is regulated in Queensland, Tasmania and Western Australia, and the cosmetic use of IPL is regulated only in Tasmania.
How Does GST Apply to Cosmetic Treatments in a Medical Practice?
Cosmetic treatments are usually taxable. The ATO treats a medical service as GST free when a Medicare benefit is payable. Where no Medicare benefit is payable and the procedure is predominantly for improving appearance, 10% GST applies. Laser hair reduction, cosmetic injectables and skin rejuvenation generally fall into this taxable group.
For a practice opening a cosmetic division, that means separating GST free consultations from taxable cosmetic services in your billing and BAS reporting. Speak with your accountant before launch so the division is set up correctly from the first invoice.
A Division Inside Your Practice, or a Standalone Clinic
| Division inside your practice | New standalone clinic | |
|---|---|---|
| Premises | Your existing rooms | New lease and fit out |
| Patients | Your existing patient base | Built from zero |
| Clinical oversight | Your doctors on site | Must be arranged |
| Local reputation | Already established | Built from zero |
| Brand identity | Your practice plus CDSHC | Franchise brand only |
Build a $500K – $1M Revenue Division
CDSHC sets a growth objective of $500,000 to $1 million in annual revenue for suitable partner divisions. That figure is an objective, not a guarantee. Actual performance depends on location, clinical capacity, service mix, marketing, patient demand and execution.
The commercial case rests on:
- A new revenue stream alongside your existing services
- Infrastructure you have already paid for
- Treatments that patients repeat on a schedule, such as laser hair reduction courses and skin maintenance programs
- Higher value services, such as resurfacing and pigmentation treatment
Before you apply, model the division against your own numbers: available room hours, clinician capacity, local demand and the fixed monthly costs above. A partner who cannot staff the rooms consistently will not reach the objective regardless of the brand.
