The Technology

What Is a Pico Laser Machine?

A pico laser device fires energy in picoseconds trillionths of a second. Older Q-switched systems fire in nanoseconds, a thousand times longer. That difference matters clinically: the shorter the pulse, the more the energy acts as a photoacoustic shockwave that shatters pigment into fine particles, and the less it behaves as heat spreading into surrounding tissue.

For your clinic that translates into three commercial advantages pigment clears in fewer sessions, a wider range of Fitzpatrick skin types can be treated with appropriate parameters, and your treatment menu extends past tattoo removal into pigmentation, acne marks and carbon facials: the treatments clients rebook.

None — “pico laser” is simply the shorthand. Both describe a laser with pulse durations measured in picoseconds, as distinct from older nanosecond Q-switched systems.

No. PicoSure is a different manufacturer’s platform and a registered trade mark of that company. PICOMax Clear is a separate picosecond device supplied in Australia by Aesthetics Consults. Both operate on picosecond principles, but wavelengths, spot sizes and pricing differ.

1064nm and 532nm. The 1064nm wavelength is used for black and dark pigment and deeper targets; 532nm targets red, orange and lighter pigments as well as superficial pigmentation.

Requirements vary by state and territory. Queensland, Western Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory have specific radiation-safety licensing or registration requirements for Class 3B and Class 4 cosmetic lasers, while other jurisdictions rely largely on general work-health-and-safety duties. Confirm current obligations with your state health or radiation-safety regulator before operating. Clinical training is included with every PICOMax Clear purchase.

It depends on ink colours, density, depth, tattoo age and the client’s skin type and immune response — assessed individually. Multi-session protocols with review between treatments are standard.

Tattoo removal across multiple ink colours, pigmentation and melasma, freckles, sun damage, age spots, Nevus of Ota, benign pigmented lesions, acne pigmentation, carbon facial (Hollywood Peel) and skin rejuvenation. With the optional honeycomb fractional attachment it also addresses acne scarring, fine lines and enlarged pores.
